Healthyish wants to redefine what a site about healthy food and wellness can be. In addition to our recipes and quarterly editorial packages (like The Feel Good Food Plan and The Healthyish Guide to Being Alone), we aim to publish conversational, passionate articles that cover the many intersections of food, wellness, and culture today.
Healthyish is a small team and the majority of our articles are written by freelancers, so we are always looking for new stories. We are especially interested in expanding our network of BIPOC writers. We hope that these guidelines help provide greater transparency around our publishing process, increase access to our editors, broaden our community, and expand our commitment to inclusive, intersectional coverage.
General pitch guidelines:
- Start by introducing yourself and include links to any clips (a.k.a articles you’ve written) that you’d like us to look at.
- Include a potential headline (to demonstrate the overall angle of the pitch) and word count. Healthyish Loves It pieces run around 250 words, service pieces run around 500-800 words, and personal essays can be longer. Payment starts at $300 ($100 for Healthyish Loves It) and increases based on experience and the complexity and/or amount of reporting in the piece.
- Tell us the entire arc of the story. Pitches shouldn't be teases; they should include the beginning, middle, and end of the piece as you envision it. It’s not enough to say you’d like to "explore an issue." What do you want to say about that issue, ultimately?
- Explain why you are the best person to write this piece and how your perspective will factor in, especially if you’re pitching a first-person piece. If you plan to include interviews, mention a few potential sources.
- Check to be sure that we haven’t published anything too similar recently.
- Do you imagine this piece as part of a column or series? Is there a great Instagram component? Let us know how you see this living online.
- If your pitch is time sensitive and needs an immediate response, please put “TIMELY” in the subject line. We will otherwise aim to respond to pitches within two weeks, but inboxes can get unwieldy, so please follow up if you haven’t received a response after then.
Pitches that might be a good fit for us include:
Actionable service pieces: A story on getting into composting when you don’t have a backyard, a formula for riffable homemade ginger shots, a beginner’s guide to making weed butter.
Reported trend pieces that dig deeper into the wide world of wellness: An article on how restaurant running clubs are providing staff with substance-free socializing opportunities, an investigation into how Indian food became a wellness trend, a piece on the NYC nightclubs incorporating wellness practices.
