Is your baby about to turn 6 months old and you’re thinking about what foods to start him on? Are you already on the baby food journey and you’re getting stuck on what to serve every day?
My little princess Aria will be 6 months in a few weeks and I know I’m already compiling a list of foods to start with.
It’s actually a lot easier than you think to come up with vegan baby food recipes since most little ones start out with fruits and veggies anyway.
By adding plant based protein sources, as well as healthy fats and whole grains, you’ve got yourself completely vegan meals, with all the nutrients your baby needs.
Whether you’re vegan or not, you may be wondering if it’s safe to feed a baby a vegan diet.
As a vegan for over 5 years, I thought this too when starting my older daughter on solids. I reached out to a children’s nutritionist who reassured me that it’s completely safe and healthy to follow a plant based diet, as long as you ensure you’re little one gets enough protein and fat.
Protein foods for babies
Here you will find some excellent protein rich foods that are entirely vegan and cruelty free. Feed your little one wholesome foods, knowing no animals were harmed in the process.
Vegan protein can come in many forms such as lentils, beans, tofu, and nut butter.
Just to point out, Haylee tasted all of these foods when she was younger and they’re definitely baby approved!
These are also excellent foods for baby led weaning, to help your baby develop the pincer grasp and gain independence and confidence with food.
1. Chickpea Omelette
These are easy to make and resemble an egg omelette. Simply skip out the salt since babies under 1 shouldn’t have any salt. You can smear a bit of tahini on top for added protein and iron.
2. Red Lentil Pancakes
Warm savory pancakes are excellent for breakfast instead of the traditional sweet pancakes. Lentils are a great source of protein, iron, zinc, and potassium. Just skip out the salt so they’re baby friendly.
3. Vegan Tahini Mac n Cheese
Which kid doesn’t like mac n cheese? As a vegan, you can still enjoy this delicious staple by following this simple recipe.
4. Peanut Butter Chickpea Muffins
These muffins are excellent to serve your baby as a snack. There are just a few slight adjustments to make it vegan and baby friendly.
Instead of eggs, use flax eggs – 1 tablespoon ground flax seeds mixed with 3 tablespoons water is the equivalent of 1 egg. Skip the chocolate chips, and instead of maple syrup, use mashed bananas.
5. Carrot and Chickpea Veggie Burger
Here’s a twist to the usual meat burger. Instead, it’s completely plant based and still packed with protein for your little one. Just ditch the salt since it’s unnecessary for babies.
6. Vegetable Lentil Loaf
This is a great meal to serve your baby. Use water for cooking the lentils instead of vegetable broth since broths tend to be high in sodium which isn’t good for babies.
There’s no need to make the glaze for this baby food recipe, and like the other recipes, skip the salt.
7. Vegan Meatballs
Excellent to serve plain or with a simple tomato sauce. These vegan meatballs were a favorite when I made them for Haylee.
8. Baked Oatmeal Cups
These muffins are perfect for breakfast or a snack. Best part is that they’re so easy to make and are freezer friendly!
9. Baby Oatmeal Cookies
These cookies only contain a handful of ingredients and are ready in under 30 minutes. This is one of my go-to vegan baby food recipes for my daughter.
10. Beet and Carrot Cookies
These cookies are not only sweet but also loaded with veggies. Give it a try and your baby will surely love it!
